Participation in Ironman for Fund for research in structural and congenital heart disease
What?
On 18 August 2024, a trio of friends from Kortrijk will take part in their very first full distance Ironman in Frankfurt.
Henri Verhelst, Mathieu Lebbe and Laurens Vanden Bulcke are currently fiercely committed to a challenging preparation in order to successfully complete this race.
With our participation, we wish to support KU Leuven's cardiovascular disease research centre.
More specifically, the Fund for research in structural and congenital heart disease stood out, as this is a fund that is literally close to our hearts.
Why your support?
During our student days in Leuven, we lost a good friend, who was also fond of sports, to sudden heart failure. Since he and so many other loved ones no longer get the chance to take up their favourite sporting challenge or generally practice for an outlet, we would like to contribute to all research into the broad understanding of heart failure.
Also, for one of us, this will immediately be the last Ironman because an admittedly minute structural abnormality makes a heart valve less functional and it seems less sensible to participate in such long-distance races later in life.
Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is no longer able to pump out enough blood to meet the needs of the tissues. The heart normally pumps around exactly the amount of blood the body needs. In heart failure, the pumping function is impaired and the heart pumps too little blood around.
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. It kills more than 17 million people every year. Our scientists and healthcare providers strive day by day to bring that number down. The Fund for research in structural and congenital heart disease aims to advance research in structural and congenital heart disease.
Your contribution supports the Fund for research in structural and congenital heart disease. In doing so, you are putting a positive light on the lives of many patients. From a contribution of 40 euros, you will receive a tax certificate giving you a tax benefit of 45% of your donation. Thank you in advance for your support!
Do you prefer to give via bank transfer? You can also support the action with a donation to the account number BE45 7340 1941 7789, BIC code KREDBEBB of KU Leuven, using the structured communication +++400/0025/40934+++.
Your donation will be included in the total amount within the week. Do you have a question? Always welcome: contact us

The friends already participated in Ironman 70.3 in Marbella last year
KU Leuven will provide Laurens Vanden Bulcke, the project owner, with a list of names of the donors who have paid through this crowdfunding campaign.
