What?

In February 2023, I, Lauranne, was told that a surgically removed cyst contained cancer cells, against all odds. During my subsequent nightly research activities, I came to the conclusion that the prognosis in ovarian cancer is downright poor. A finding that I found unacceptable. After my treatment, I contacted KU Leuven for that reason, which led to the creation of this fund. I was "lucky"; most women with ovarian cancer are not so lucky.  This research can change that.

Why do we need your support?

Mucinous ovarian cancer is a rare type of ovarian cancer and affects women younger than 45 years in 25% of cases. Current therapeutic treatment involves surgical removal of the ovaries, followed by standard chemotherapy or other treatment that is ineffective for this particular cancer. This comes at a significant personal and social cost.

How do we make a difference?

Due to the lack of clinical data, it is essential to conduct preclinical studies that closely match clinical practice, using relevant models. Prof. Amant, prof. Van Nieuwenhuysen and their team aim to translate this clinical need by developing a new model in the lab for rare gynaecological cancers based on a technique developed at the Dutch Cancer Institute. This model should be able to predict which treatment will work and which will not. The cost? 2,500 euros per model. The impact of this unique project goes even wider: in a second phase, the models could be applied to other, non-rare cancers.

Your contribution to mucinous ovarian cancer research will help develop new therapeutic strategies. If you donate at least 40 euros on an annual basis, you will be entitled to a tax certificate and a 45% tax reduction on the donated amount. You will receive your certificate in the month of March of the year following your donation. Thank you very much for your solidarity.

Do you prefer to give via bank transfer? You can also support the action by making a donation to account number BE45 7340 1941 7789, BIC code KREDBEBB of KU Leuven, stating the structured communication +++400/0026/34294+++.

Your donation will be included in the total amount within the week. Do you have a question? Always welcome: contact us.

KU Leuven will provide Lauranne Truyens, the project owner, with a list of names of the donors who have paid through this crowdfunding campaign.
